Friday, April 10th - A Day
Reminder to all ELL students going on the field trip today: Please meet Ms. Ryan in the cafeteria at 8:15 am with everything you would like to bring on the field trip. We will return to school at about 2:15 pm.
Don’t forget to vote for our very own Hastings Middle School 8th graders for the Escape the Vape Video Challenge. Voting ends April 22nd
Attention students: Next week on Tuesday and Wednesday, you will be taking your reading MCAs. You will spend the first 2 hours of the testing days doing your MCA testing. Then you will report to all your classes but they will be shortened for the day. To start the day, you will report to your advisory classes unless you are told otherwise. Remember to bring your charged Chromebook, an IDR book, markers or colored pencils, and wired headphones.
The book Mrs. Wohnoutka recommends is Masterminds by Gordon Korman. This book takes you on an unforgettable and unforgivable journey as the main characters find out the unbelievable truth about their city, their parents, and themselves! You will be mind blown with the unexpected ending of this book! There are 2 more books that continue the crazy adventures of these kid masterminds!
The Clean Up, People! (CUP) Award competition is happening this spring to keep our spaces clean. Once each week, certain students and staff will rate how clean each of the following spaces are in each grade-level house: Bathrooms, Hallways, and Flexible areas like stairways and seating areas. The votes are in and this week’s winner of the Clean Up, People (CUP) Award is sixth grade! Sixth graders have earned one day next week of Chromebooks at lunch or outside during advisory - stay tuned to the announcements next week for more information. This award will have a new grade-level winner each week so remember to Clean Up, People!
Shout out to the HMS Raiders Swim and Dive team. They won both of their meets this week, wrapping up our season. Great job!

In Mrs. Wohnoutka’s book, Eli is the only kid becoming concerned about what he knows about his peaceful town. When he shares this information with his most trusted friends, they don’t believe him. When he begins to question them about odd happenings, they join him in his investigation of their beloved town.

Escape the Vape Video Challenge News: 3 out of the 5 finalists are from Hastings Middle School: Make sure to vote with the link your teachers provided and hopefully one of them from HMS can win! Voting ends April 22nd
Here is more about Mrs. Wohnoutka’s book recommendation–After Eli and his friend Randy innocently bike to view an abandoned, vintage car, Eli is literally sickened but Randy is not. Shortly after this event, Randy is sent away to a new town and new school BUT, his parents don’t leave with him… Eli is left to wonder why his best friend Randy is sent away but his parents are not.
Outdoor Club kids attending the Vertical Endeavors Rock Climbing Trip TODAY–remember that we are going to meet by the Welcome Center doors right after 5th hour TODAY. Don’t forget to connect with your 6th hour teacher and ask them about missing work.

There will be a Student Council meeting tomorrow in Ms. Ryan’s room at 7:40 am!

The setting of the book that Mrs. Wohnoutka recommends, is in a lovely fictional town called Serenity, New Mexico. It appears everything is wonderful until the kids take their bikes to the edge of town and something so crazy and unexpected happens–it changes everything!

6th and 7th grade students, here is your final reminder that applications for next year's WEB leaders are due by 3:30 PM TODAY. Absolutely no late applications will be accepted.

This week Mrs. Wohnoutka recommends a book that is part of a trilogy written by Gordon Korman. Eli, the main character, thinks his town is perfect. Everyone has a great house with a pool, there are no money problems and crime is unheard of. Honesty and integrity are taught at home and school. Seems peaceful, right? We’ll see–listen in tomorrow for more information on this book!
